When did you last hit pause?

I adore my work as a Virtual Assistant, but I always make sure to schedule in some relaxation time. Whether that’s planning family time, a spot of gaming in the lounge or a sunny afternoon spent chilling at the park with the dog and child.

Taking time for yourself is not just a luxury; it is a necessity for your mental and physical well-being, especially in our fast-paced world. When you intentionally carve out time for self-care, you are making a powerful statement about what truly matters in your life. This dedicated downtime is essential for maintaining balance and preventing burnout, which can derail your progress and diminish your joy.

Think about it: when you allow yourself moments to recharge, reflect, and rejuvenate, you are setting the stage for greater productivity and creativity. Imagine returning to your responsibilities with renewed energy and fresh perspectives—your output will be sharper, your ideas more innovative, and your interactions more meaningful. Whether you choose to take a quiet walk in nature, immerse yourself in a good book, or engage in meditation, these moments of relaxation are vital for your overall well-being.

It’s important to remember that by being kind to yourself and protecting your downtime, you’re not just investing in your own happiness; you’re also enhancing your ability to serve others. When you are well-rested and centred, you can engage with the world around you in a much more impactful way. It certainly helps me to deliver a fantastic service to clients of SB Virtual Assistant.

So quick, go block out some ‘you time’ in your diary and practice being kind to yourself!

The Silent Struggle: Mental Health and the Business Owner

By SydneyB

Wednesday 21st May 2025

Running a business can be one of the most rewarding ventures in life — but behind the scenes, it can also be one of the most mentally and emotionally demanding. Long hours, financial pressures, leadership responsibilities, and the constant need to innovate can take a toll on any entrepreneur’s mental well-being.

Yet, mental health is often the last thing business owners talk about.

🧿 🧿 🧿

Why Mental Health Matters for Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs and business owners are more likely than the general population to experience:

Stress and burnout

Anxiety and depression

Sleep disturbances

Feelings of isolation or imposter syndrome

When your mental health suffers, so does your decision-making, productivity, creativity, and even your ability to lead effectively. In short, your business can’t thrive if you aren’t well.

Signs You Might Be Struggling

Here are a few warning signs that your mental health may be declining:

Constant fatigue or trouble sleeping

Feeling overwhelmed or unable to “switch off”

Increased irritability or mood swings

Difficulty concentrating

Withdrawing from others

Lack of joy or motivation in your work

Practical Tips for Managing Mental Health as a Business Owner

1. Set Boundaries

Create clear working hours and unplug when the day ends.

Take regular breaks, including full days off and holidays.

2. Build a Support Network

Surround yourself with mentors, peers, or business groups where you can talk openly.

Don’t isolate yourself — connection is key.

3. Delegate and Automate

You can’t do everything. Hire help, delegate tasks, and use automation tools where possible.

4. Prioritise Physical Health

Regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and sleep hygiene all play a huge role in your mental state.

5. Practice Mindfulness

Techniques like meditation, journaling, or deep breathing can help reduce anxiety and improve clarity.

6. Seek Professional Help

Speaking to a therapist or counsellor is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Many UK services offer affordable or business-focused mental health support (e.g., Mind, Mental Health UK, or BACP).

Final Thoughts

As a business owner, your health — including your mental health — is your most important asset. The hustle culture may glorify sleepless nights and relentless grind, but sustainability is key. By investing in your mental well-being, you’re not only protecting yourself but also strengthening your business and everyone it touches.

You’re not alone. Speak up, slow down when needed, and remember: taking care of yourself is the most powerful business strategy you’ll ever implement.
